INFLUENCE OF TEMIK ALDICARB PLACEMENT FOR PRODUCTION OF 'MARSH' GRAPEFRUIT IN A BEDDED GROVE

BULLOCK, R. C.

Abstract

The effect of granular aldicarb (Temik) on yield, quality and pest control when applied to bed tops (= middles) compared to both top + furrows was evaluated over a 3 year period in a block of mature 'Marsh' grapefruit trees planted on double beds. This system was also compared to fenamiphos (Nemacur) soil treatments and insecticide foliar sprays. Aldicarb treatments, regardless of placement, produced significantly fewer russetted fruit and significantly more fruit of preferred sizes (36's + 40's) at harvest than other programs. On-tree storage between December and February reduced % acid and increased ratio, fruit weight and peel russeting. Confining aldicarb applications to bed tops would be as effective as treating both top + furrow, would save application time and prevent damage to water furrows by application equipment.
