AN EVALUATION OF TWO NEW HERBICIDE PRODUCTS UNDER DIFFERENT IRRIGATION REGIMES

Abstract


Two new herbicide products, thiazopyr (Mandate) and azafenidin (Milestone) were evaluated for the Florida citrus market from 1995 through 1997 on a Candler fine sand near Winter Garden, Florida. Treatments included azafenidin (Milestone) at 1.0 lb ai/acre, thiazopyr (Mandate) + oxyfluorfen (Goal) at 0.33 + 1.0 lb ai/acre, oryzalin (Surflan) + oxyfluorfen (Goal) at 2.0 + 1.0 lb ai/acre. Dichlobenil (Casoron) at 4.0 lb ai/ acre was applied through 1995 and replaced with norflurazon (Solicam) + diuron (Karmex) at 3.2 + 1.8 lb ai/acre in 1996 due to unsatisfactory control. Azafenidin was only applied once during 1996 as retreatment was not warranted. Treatments were applied under two different irrigation regimes. All treatments, with the exception of dichlobenil, provided acceptable levels of weed control under both low and moderate irrigation levels on initial ratings. However, differences in control levels were observed in subsequent ratings. Thiazopyr + oxyfluorfen and oryzalin + oxyfluorfen provided acceptable levels of control up to 5 months after application under the low irrigation regime. Azafenidin provided the best weed control throughout the course of the study under both low and moderate irrigation regimes.
