THE CITRUS INTEGRATOR: A DECISION FLOWCHART FOR TEACHING INTEGRATED CROP MANAGEMENT

Abstract


Decision support models for integrated crop management (ICM) can range from the simplistic to the highly complex. Most useful models likely fall somewhere between the two extremes. The needs of teachers, researchers and growers should also be met so that continuity can be maintained from the classroom to the field. If meaningful advances in ICM are to be transferred to the field, then a decision support standard must be developed. This paper proposes one such model --the Citrus Integrator--as a step in that direction. The modular framework of the Citrus Integrator is readily adjusted and expandable as integrated management strategies are improved. The temporal concept of the "management cell" is also introduced. Management cells relate crop phenology to the timing of specific integrated plant protection tactics. Implications of the model for past, current and future citrus production are also discussed.
