Out of Africa II ... more "new African" plants with ornamental potential

John L. Griffis,JR.

Plants from many parts of the world have unrealized ornamental potential. During 1997, seeds were collected from unusual plants found growing in parts of eastern and southern Africa. Some of these plants should make interesting ornamentals without much improvement, while others, through breeding, might add novel traits to existing groups of ornamental plants. Various plants from these collected seeds have been undergoing evaluation and selection in central Florida. Some of the plants currently under scrutiny are members of Asclepiadaceae, Balsaminaceae, Fabaceae, Lamiaceae, Scrophulariaceae, Solanaceae, and Verbenaceae.
