Serpent of Brass

Jose E. Rodriguez, MD

Abstract

There is a story in the bible about a brass serpent that could heal people from snake bites.  The story teaches that the people had to look at the serpent, and be healed.  Many people were did not choose to do so, and they died. They are represented by burned tombstones.  Those who lived are standing on the hill and by the serpent.  Although we can trace the origins of the symbol of medicine back to the ancient greeks, this story pre-dates them by thousands of years, and could very well be an alternate origin story.
