The Expressive Teacher: Renewing Vitality through Arts-Based Professional Development

Abstract


The arts can offer a valuable professional development model inviting teachers to reflect critically on their practice while gaining new knowledge and beliefs about teaching and learning. This paper documents the results of a study designed to investigate the changes K-12 teachers experienced when participating in arts-based professional development workshop. All participants reported experiencing either or both professional and personal benefits from the workshop. Teachers described forming new interpretations, differentiating among previously constructed ideas, and transforming these into new knowledge, which they reported gave them a new lease on their teaching careers.
