DIOSCOREA FLORIBUNDA, A POTENTIAL SOURCE OF NEMATICIDES OF PLANT ORIGIN

R. C. Nath, B. Mukherjee

Abstract

The nematicidal potential of aqueous extracts of tubers of medicinal yam, Dioscorea floribunda, against Meloidogyne incognita was evaluated in vitro and in vivo. Egg hatching was inhibited by 17.5 to 77.6% at 0.5 to 20% concentrations, respectively. Concentrations of the aqueous extracts at 20,10 and 5% killed 100% juveniles within 2.5, 3 and 4 hr, respectively. Soil amendments with chopped tuber significantly suppressed the root-knot development and greatly improved plant growth of tomato as compared with the inoculated control. The plant material possesses strong nematicidal properties, which can be successfully used as pre-plant nursery treatments.
