Author Guidelines


Call for papers

Submissions are will no longer be considered for the Spring 2018 edition of The Owl. Papers submitted from March-December 2018 will be considered for the Spring 2019 edition. You may upload your manuscript at any time prior to the deadline. Manuscripts are chosen based on scholarly merit, not submission date. Please submit your manuscript by registering as an author, and following instructions. The Owl has a rolling submission process and accepts manuscripts for the next available issue throughout the academic year.

Submission Components

  • A short bio
  • Abstract
  • An electronic copy of the manuscript/paper with appropriate title
  • Research Supervisor Release Form completed by faculty supervisor and uploaded to "Supplementary Files"
  • Read and affirm your agreement to the Student Submission Agreement on the "Submit Article" page.


  • .Doc format (Microsoft Word)
  • 12 point font
  • Times News Roman
  • 1 inch margins
  • Double spaced
  • Place only one space after each period
  • Page numbers required
  • If applicable, format citation weblinks as DOIs when possible

Paper length

  • The mandatory bio has a strict 50 word count limit
  • The mandatory abstract has a strict 150-200 word count limit
  • The mandatory manuscript has a strict 1400-5000 word count limit (excluding citations/bibliography)

Graphs, Illustrations, & Pictures

  • All graphs, illustrations, and pictures must be publication-ready (if you are concerned about image quality, please send the original images rather than screenshots/reduced file size versions)
  • Place all graphs, illustrations, and pictures where you would like them to be within the paper (at the end or throughout)
  • Re-sizing will be necessary and will be done by the editorial staff if your paper is chosen to be published
  • Your graph, illustration, and/or picture should be able to be viewed regardless whether in black or white or in color

Criteria for Journal Publication

  • The manuscript must be written in laymen’s terms and for a general audience. Please add a glossary if necessary.
  • Citations must be presented in end-note format. For rules and directions on end-note formatting, please visit the “About this Journal” tab on the left hand side of the page.
  • The author’s name should ONLY appear on the front of the paper. This aids the editorial board in conducting a blind review.
  • Prior to submitting, read the “About this Journal - FAQ” page for important information regarding your manuscript.


Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The submission file is in .doc or .docx file format.
  3. The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point Times New Roman font; and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  4. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  5. Complete the Supervisor Release Form.
